When I became aware of the world again, I found myself looking up at the face of old Mr. Penelli, who was kneeling beside me. He hadn't run out on me, after all. Standing above him, staring down at me, were two uniformed prowl-car cops.

"Jesus," one of them was saying, "that's the fourth fight we busted up tonight. They ought to charge admission to this neighborhood."

The other one said, "Did you get a good look at the two of 'em that run off?"

"Who cares?" the first cop growled. "It's all over with now, anyway."

I wanted to tell them all how glad I was to see them. But I couldn't even keep my eyes open any longer. My brain made itself very small and crawled into a deep, narrow hole in the ground and pulled the dirt in over it and went to sleep.
